“This is the first time an exhibition has been organized in Portugal on the history of the knotted-pile carpet, and that looks, simultaneously, at the inventory and significance of the representation of the carpet in Portuguese painting in the Early Modern period. The realization of this important project has been possible owing to the importance of the oriental carpet collection of the Textile Department of the MNAA, the generosity of public and private institutions invited to participate, the research, experience and enormous commitment of the curators, Jessica Fallett and Teresa Pacheco Pereira [...].
“Organized in four parts, the exhibition follows the evolution of the oriental carpet trade with Portugal, beginning with carpets produced in the Iberian Peninsula. followed by Turkish, Persian and Indian imports, and looks at these exceptional objects held in high esteem in royal, noble and religious contexts. Surviving carpets are displayed alongside their images as compositional elements in a series of paintings dating from sixteenth to eighteenth centuries. [..]”.
