Rare books and original customers

It opened its doors in 1959 on Rua Formosa, but aficionados of old books know that today, after more than 90 catalogs of rare and out-of-print works, it’s on Dr. Alves da Veiga that we find Livraria Manuel Ferreira.

The former bookshop is “responsible for organizing a hundred private libraries for sale at auction”, thus enriching the bibliographic panorama in Portugal, says Herculano Ferreira, today the face of one of the biggest references in the bookshop universe in Portugal.

The family business, where he worked during his vacations as a young man, gave him a taste for books: “It’s books that allow me this constant freedom to learn and satisfy my curiosity,” he explains.

More original than some rare books are the requests of some customers. Once, she was asked for a set of books 18 cm high and with a specific binding: they had to be red, “the color of a small wool thread that the lady had in her purse so that they could match the color of the carpet,” she says, amused.
